Childcare allowance
As of January 1, 2021, working parents receive a higher childcare allowance for each child than in 2020. The height of the increase depends on the overall income of a family.
The Childcare Act regulates the quality and funding of childcare. The starting point for
funding is that childcare is a matter of parents and government. Parents who work or study
and combine this with care for children receive a subsidy from the government. How much
depends on your income, the hours worked and the number of children you receive and can be up to 80% of the costs of childcare. At the tax office you can find more information on
childcare allowances:

Maximum reimbursement rates
The maximum hourly rate for day care at which the surcharge rates apply will be for the € 8,46.
The maximum hourly rate for the extracurricular shelter on which the surcharge rates apply is € 7.27.
Provision rates and income classes
Another reason why the childcare allowance is higher in 2021 is the increase in childcare allowance rates. The fixed footage (the percentage that parents always receive childcare allowance) rises from 23.8% to 33.3%.
In addition, income classes in the childcare allowance table are increased.
Easily calculate your net costs
The actual net benefit, for you as a parent, depends on, the number of children using child care (more children means more support), your family’s combined income (combined net income), and the number of hours of childcare you receive. You can easily calculate your net costs using a tax assessment of the Tax Administration: https://www.belastingdienst.nl/rekenhulpen/toeslagen.
When will you be entitled to childcare allowance in 2021?
The care of your child or children takes place at a registered children’s residence or registered guest parent (‘t Knuffeltje is recognised by the government).
• Your child goes to registered childcare. This includes the registered daycare and the extracurricular shelter.
• Childcare allowance is allowed per child up to 230 hours per month.
• Your right to childcare allowance depends on the number of hours you and your partner work and your joint income. Even if you study, follow a course to get to work or follow a mandatory integration course, you are entitled to childcare allowance.
6 months right to surcharge on resignation
- Parents who are unemployed do not immediately lose their right to childcare allowance. Also in 2021, parents who lost their jobs will be entitled to childcare benefits for another 6 months. As a result, parents have the time to apply and have their children the benefit of the continuity of childcare.
